Health care claim costs expected to rise 10.5 pct

Costs for employer-provided health plans are expected to rise more than 10 percent within the next 12 months, a jump workers may feel in their paychecks or through changes to their insurance coverage.

An aging population, rising costs and growing patient demand for services are among the reasons for the higher costs cited in an Aon Consulting report released Tuesday.

I think this will be even worse when the number of providers willing to provide care for the lower priced insurance payors drops off like it will when the “new plans” take effect. I don’t believe they will pass as is, but reform will take place and many of the old school physicians that have made their millions will stop practicing. Many of them are already at or close to retirement age. Those that lost money in the stock market are investing elsewhere and sure won’t work in the new climates. This is going to cause healthcare costs to soar for employer’s and employees!

I agree. It is likely that providers will begin to opt out of health plans if the reimbursements are not generous enough. We saw this begin to happen last year when the Medicare reimbursement dropped by 10%. Before it was reversed some providers began to opt out of the system, while others were weighing their options. In the future we could see practices that refuse to see Medicare patients. That will cause those practices that see those patients to have long waiting lists and, as we all know, delayed care is not good care.
