Vision Testing Kiosk to be Introduced in St Louis

Atlanta-based SoloHealth has developed EyeSite, an interactive vision-testing kiosk that provides consumers with a free assessment of their vision, information about common eye conditions and referrals to local eye care providers. According to Bart Foster, the company’s founder and chief executive, this week SoloHealth will install 29 EyeSite units in St. Louis in addition to new units in Houston, Texas.

I’m not sure how to feel about these. There may be a great many consumers that feel as though these replace an eye exam. A sort of “scan a patient” for free to save having to deal with the “insurance mess” we are experiencing now. Combine that with the illiteracy problems and the probability that providers will have to pay to be listed on any given kiosk this could do more harm than good for patient care. Who knows. It will also depend on the size of the community that it would be serving and the general age and intelegence of the population. Technology can be good and bad. Hold your breath and jump on in fellow eye care professionals.

I agree that this technology could do more harm than good. If a patient were to find that their vision is good, they might be convinced to forgo their regular eye health checkup. By the time their vision shows changes it could be too late to. I also agree that this technology is great for the company that owns it. Eye doctors and vendors will pay for placement. It’s the public who will suffer. I’d be surprised if the AOA and/or AAO don’t have strong objections to this.
