declare september ‘home eye safety awareness month’

Prevent Blindness America has declared September as Home Eye Safety Awareness Month urging the public to take extra care in protecting their eyes to avoid painful and potentially blinding eye accidents at home.   This presents an opportunity for your practice to do the same.  Here are some facts to share with your patients:

  • Every year there are more than 2.5 million eye injuries.
  • 90% of eye injuries can be prevented by using protective eyewear.
  • One in five at-home eye injuries were due to home repair or power tools according to results from the “Sixth Annual Eye Injury Snapshot” by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Society of Ocular Trauma (ASOT).
  • Most accidents occur from flying debris while gardening.
  • Serious eye injuries can be avoided by simply using the proper eye protection.

ADG&A recommends that its clients educate their patients about these risks and provide a number of ways for them to protect their eyes.  From polycarbonate lenses to plano safety shields, the goal is to help reduce the number of eye accidents.
