board certification for ods moves one step closer

Since the late-June vote by the American Optometric Association’s House of Delegates in favor of certification for optometrists, several other optometry organizations have formally signed on to the plan.

Early this month, the AOA announced that a joint memorandum of understanding has been entered into by the American Academy of Optometry , the American Optometric Student Association, the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, and the AOA regarding formation and organization of the American Board of Optometry. The ABO’s mission is to develop and implement the frameworks for optometric board certification and maintenance of certification for optometry.

The memorandum of understanding is seen as the first step toward formation of that entity. The various optometry organizations involved have begun naming reps to the ABO board of directors.
