National Quality Forum (NQF) Endorses Eye Care Measures

Recently, the NQF endorsed four eye care measures that address glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts. The two cataract measures focus on postoperative complications and visual acuity following cataract surgery. An age-related macular degeneration, measure will address counseling on antioxidant supplements for this condition. The final eye care measure will address the treatment and/or the development of a plan of care for patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. ASCRS collaborated with the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) through the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI) to develop these eye care measures, which have been included in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) 2010 Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) program. More information, including a complete description of each measure is available on the NQF web site.
