Ophthalmology, Optometry Call on FDA to Investigate Color Contact Marketing

This week, the Academy joined with the American Optometric Association (AOA) to urge the FDA to launch an investigation into Internet sales of decorative contact lenses not supervised by a qualified eye care professional. Since 2005, all contact lenses, including decorative, non-corrective contact lenses, have been regulated as medical devices under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The FDA has previously inspected several firms distributing decorative contact lenses and warned them that it violates federal law to sell decorative contact lenses without a valid prescription or proper labeling that includes information about the risks and proper instructions for safe use. The Academy and AOA urged the FDA to take action to protect consumers against an ongoing public health threat.

Even many products found at the health food store can contain harmful ingredients as they are
not required to meet FDA standards. Sometimes these conditions can cause blindness if not treated to regular check ups with
the eye doctor are vital. The problem of lesser and thinner eyelashes is no more a
    mental tension.
