Vision-Related Goals Included in Healthy People 2020 Initiative

This week the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) formally launched the Healthy People 2020 initiative. Since 1979, HHS has used these science-based initiatives, setting 10-year national objectives for promoting health and preventing disease. Specific vision-related goals were included for the first time in Healthy People 2010; the American Academy of Ophthalmology joined with others in the vision community, NEI and HHS to maintain these goals in Healthy People 2020. The Academy was supported during the development of the 2020 vision goals by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology.
