Public confused about MDs and ODs

A recent nationwide survey by the American Medical Association indicates that only 71% believe ophthalmologists are medical doctors, while 54% believe optometrists are medical doctors.  In other findings, the survey indicates that 94% of those surveyed believe that only a medical doctor should be able to do surgical procedures on the eye that require the use of a scalpel.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology has long recommended that ophthalmologists adopt the title of EyeMD, as it is there belief that this reference helps patients and prospective patients to recognize the doctor’s status as a physician and medical doctor.  ADG&A strongly advises it clients to follow the AAO’s suggestion.  This means changing all references ophthalmolgists make to themselves including signage, business cards, web site, letterhead and all other forms of marketing and advertising.
