The American Academy of Ophthalmology Weighs in on Online Eye Tests

A recent article published by the AAO on the EyeSmart web site discusses getting an eyeglass prescription online.  The AAO thinks such examinations “…may be appropriate for people 18-39 years of age with non-severe corrective eyeglass prescriptions and no symptoms of eye disease.”  Similarly, they do not feel such examinations are appropriate for those under 18 or older than 40.

The AAO empathizes that those individuals 18-39 seeking online eye examinations should still obtain comprehensive eye examinations and that “Providers of online vision testing services should clearly emphasize” this.  For those people with no risk factors, a 5-10 year time-frame is recommended.  For those with risk factors, existing eye disorders or symptoms, annual examinations are  recommended.

Since ophthalmology practice patients are generally over 40 years of age, we do not see online eye examinations have a significant impact on patient volumes in ophthalmology practices in the foreseeable future.  They could however have a significant impact on independent optometric practice and commercial chains.
